There are many starting mixes which can be used for sowing wildflower seeds. Best results are usually obtained from a mix that will ensure excellent free drainage, such as :
1 part peat moss
3 parts sharp clean, washed river sand or washed small gravel
2 parts clean sand.
An alternative sterile mix can be made of :
1 part peat moss
3 parts Perlite or Vermiculite.
The potting mix or garden bed soil shiould ensure very free drainage.
If using a mix containing garden soil or garden compost, it may help to sterilize the mix before use as a potting soil by heating it in an oven at 180 degrees Centigrade (350 degrees Fahrenheit) for 30 minutes. This will help prevent any moulds from attacking the germinating seed, prevent any stray seeds or root material from growing and may even assist as a form of smoke treatment of the soil.
A slightly acid soil is generally regarded as best for most wildflowers – a pH level of 6 (just barely acid) is about right. It is usually best to avoid soils and fertilisers containing any more than low levels of Phosphates. Most especially avoid fertilisers made from fish products or bird manure.
