Australian Grass Tree
Botanic Name : Xanthorrhoea preissii
Also known as: PALGA or BALGA
(PLEASE NOTE : Smoke is essential for the germination of this species. We recommend our Seed Starter Smoke Granules when germinating these seeds.)
A distinctive Australian evergreen plant with its striking, unusual trunk and shock of thin grass-like leaves 1.5m – 2m (5′ – 7′) in length sprouting from the top.
In late Winter or early Spring it produces a flower spike up to 3m (10′) long from the head of the plant from which it disperses its seeds on the wind in late Summer. The minute white flowers are clustered thickly along the whole of the flower spike.
The Grass Tree will gradually grow to a form its characteristic trunk. The trunk becomes blackened in nature due to naturally occurring bushfires which also stimulate flowering to occur in the following Winter / Spring. However, these plants will just as often flower without the effects of a fire.
