Mixed Colours Kangaroo Paw

Scientific Name: ANIGOZANTHOS flavidus

Common Name: Mixed Colours Kangaroo Paw

Alternative Common Name: Tall Kangaroo Paw

Family: Haemodoraceae

Height: Up to 2m (7′)

Width: Up to 1m (3′)

Description: Easiest of the Kangaroo Paws to grow. A beautiful, long-lived, hardy perennial plant which produces tall, colourful flower stems from clumps of strong green strap-like leaves. Attracts nectar feeding birds.

Flowers: Spring and Summer flowers on 2m (7′) stems can vary in colour from bright orange or yellow to a range of reds, pinks or mauve tones. Excellent in a garden display or as long-lasting cut flowers.

Soil: Will grow well in almost any well-drained soil type.

Aspects: Full sun to part shade, in most open garden positions.

Habitat: Temperate zones, mediterranean type climates. Well draines soils. Can struggle with high humidity but handles this better than most other types of Kangaroo Paw.

Growing: Fill a pot or seed tray with moist, sandy soil and compress. Sow seeds thinly on the surface of the soil. Cover with a thin layer of soil. Wet thoroughly and keep the soil moist. Cover pots with clear polythene to preserve moisture and warmth and place pots in a warm, shaded position. Will usually germinate in 14-35 days.

Landscape: Open sunny garden positions or in large pots and tubs.

Cultivation: Remove polythene cover when germination starts. Protect seedlings from snails. Transplant to larger pots or plant out to open, sunny position once seedlings are 7-8cm (3″) high. Use occasional light applications of organic or slow release fertiliser, low in phosphates. Water around the base, not on the leaves.

Seed Starter Required: Helpful.
