Description: Floral emblem of Western Australia. The most famous of Western Australia’s wildflowers. This unique perennial produces its unusual red and green flowers from late Winter to Summer.
Flowers: Striking red & green flowers resembling the paw of a kangaroo on 1m (3′) red velevety stems from late Winter to Summer. Beautiful in mass garden plantings. Excellent as long-lasting cut flowers.
Soil: Prepare a mix of 3 parts sand and 1 part peat with especially good drainage and a pH level of about 6 – just barely acid.
Aspects:
Habitat: Best in drier climates and well drained soils – doesn’t like high humidity or soggy soil.
Growing: Readily raised from seed and quick growing under cultivation – often flowering in one year. Avoid heavy watering after germination.
Landscape: In Garden Beds, Large Pots and Tubs
Cultivation: Transplant to a sunny or part-shaded position when seedlings are 7-8cm (3″) high. Water in well, then sparingly after that. Apply a small amount of natural or slow release fertiliser, low in phosphates.
